Cancer is Her Calling

A bright yellow “I <3 MY JOB” sign hangs proudly above the desk of Rosy Weisberg, LCSW. It’s true. Rosy, who works with cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy at Sylvester, was named Social Worker of the Year for 2010 by the Florida Society of Oncology Social Workers.
”It was a really nice surprise,” she says. “I really like working here. I love my job.”
Rosy has devoted her career to serving the English- and Spanish-speaking communities in South Florida, assisting patients and their families with everything from counseling to lodging to advance directives. She has worked in oncology social work for more than 15 years, and she is very involved with the American Cancer Society as a recruiter, program spokesperson, and volunteer.
Cancer is something that no one expects, so it’s critical for patients to have someone help them navigate the maze of decisions and emotions, and to offer support during this challenging time. Rosy is a beacon of hope and pillar of strength for patients. She approaches her job with compassion, understanding, and a jovial demeanor. “I believe humor is the best medicine.”
Working with cancer patients gives you a different perspective, Rosy says. It changes you for the better.
”It’s life affirming. It’s not depressing to me,” she says. “Except when we lose someone, but even then, a part of them always stays with you.”
